Identifying Watermelon Berries (wild and edible)
Watermelon berries are a seasonal, wild edible berry here in Alaska. This video shows you what the plant looks like so you could identify it yourself.
See what the watermelon berry plant leaves look like (sort of like a lily), see where the berries attach to the plant, etc. Watermelon berries are a popular berry plant for wild urban foraging in Anchorage and many other parts of Alaska.
Toward the end of this video, I chew up a watermelon berry and spit it into my hand so you can see what the seeds look like. Watermelon berries are just packed with light colored seeds that are about 2-3 times the size of raspberry seeds and almost just as tough. If you pick a bunch of watermelon berries, you’re probably going to want to turn them into a juice and strain it before cooking/baking/jelly-making.

I have just discovered watermelon berries on my property in Wasilla. When is the right time to pick them? I can’t find an answer on the Internet. Thank you.
Also known as twisted stalk. We have them in Oregon too.
The leaves are also edible
Is this an Alaskan plant?
Never heard of this before.
Never heard of watermelon berry.what state you live.if you don't mind me asking
We have them growing all around the South side of our property. Don't eat too many at once, or they can be a laxative! (Chugiak)
I want one
