5 Tips How to grow a ton of dragon fruit
This video is all about how to grow a lot of dragon fruit (pitaya) in just one container. This method is what I call the hang or grow down method where the plant is placed upon a stand or in my case a stump and left to drape down instead of being trained up a trellis or post.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started SSM in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

Great video. One question, how many plants do you have in the one pot? Thanks
Thanks so much. I picked up a discarded plant from the side of the road, and building a trellis was a challenge for me so I'm very happy to see this easier method.
wow hiw wonderful is gardening if defferent kinds of plant
Thanks from NZ . An awesome blog .
Oh.don't eat. You will get diarrhea none stop
beautiful garden
You're right in relation to the ants. I have few green ants near my house, and I get lots of flowers but few fruit. But the dragonfruit plants near my passionfruit vine with lots of green ants get lots of fruit.
Single tip to eat lots of dragon fruit…. Buy a house next to Self Sufficient Me farm.
when i hear "give it plenty of water" followed by "once or twice a week" i get confused. "plenty of water" is like let's water it every day.
Thank you so much. I can’t build a trellis so what relief to know I don’t have to.
Hello, can you tell me what soil you use for the DF?
Do you have free cuttings?
Thanks
What variety would you recommend for Mojave desert central California?
How many different varieties do you know of?

Hi Mark! Love your videos! Very good explanation and information! Always watching you!! Good luck!
You can use a sanitized box cutter and carve out rotting/infected areas while leaving the rest of the branch intact then powder the wound with Cinnamon. You can use oral hygiene hydrogen peroxide to sanitize the wound, dry, then powder. Hydrogen peroxide is just water with an extra added element of oxygen so you can add some to your watering can to stimulate growth but yeah it will scab over and still stimulate new growth. If you clip the main brain end, it will try to bush our more. If you clip the sub branches, the growth will focus more at the top of the plant aiming for length rather than width. Heat effects growth tremendously, add a heat pad with thermostat to increase plant growth. Gravity and angle also effects how the plant grows as it will try to "claw" nearby objects for better support
Just wondering if the root system wouldn't get larger ( and thus produce more fruit) in the long run if planted directly in the ground instead of a pot?
I know this is an old vid but if possible could you update the link mentioned in video 🙂 I have just picked up 2 cuttings as my 5yo ABSOLUTELY loves dragon fruit so we are going to have a crack at growing our own!
